Sunday with Manuoso Manos

Manouso Manos holds one of only two Advanced Senior certificates granted worldwide by Mr. Iyengar himself.  This past weekend at the Iyengar Conference in DC, I had the privilege and honor of studying with him for the second time.  His teaching speaks for itself, demonstrating a life committed to studying and spreading the joys of yoga. What keeps me coming back for more Manouso are his stories about Mr. Iyengar, and of course, his always humorous and insightful instruction.  I always get the feeling as if he is channeling Mr. Iyengar’s voice to us, and for that, I am ever grateful to Manouso.

Lois Steinberg

There are not enough adjectives to describe Dr. Lois Steinberg. As a teacher, she is direct, dynamic, clear, focused, engaging, gently humorous, and an invaluable resource for understanding the healing potential of yoga. The very mention of her name conjures deep respect in me.  Her book, “Geeta S. Iyengar’s Guide to a Woman’s Yoga Practice,” is an invaluable companion to Geeta’s “Yoga: A Gem for Women,” and helped me understand more fully how yoga can be a particular boon for women.  I have been blessed to study with Lois twice, and I am looking forward to her return to Unity Woods in the fall.

Read her story, “How I Came to Yoga,” Awe-inspiring. Take a look at the throwback photos of Lois!

Patricia Walden

Dreams do come true.  During the yoga conference, I finally had my chance to study with Patricia Walden.  Ah-may-zing.  She is more beautiful in person, and her light is even brighter than you can imagine. She is the ambassador of Iyengar Yoga, sharing his teachings, many imparted personally to her, with the larger community.  She is the “face” of Iyengar yoga—and its incredible back-bending silhouette. Notes and sequence after the jump. and oh yeah, I saw her do this…

This is what your sirsasana base should look like. Nice lift of the elbows, opening the armpit chest, triceps rolling in, broadening the rib cage.
This is a backbody pose—your spine is your base, and from there your muscles move upwards

This is one of my favorite asanas!  Iyengar translates the meaning of the Sanskrit name by explaining that, “Urdhva means upright, above, high. Prasarita means extended, stretched out. Eka means one, pada means the foot. This posture is done by standing on one leg, bending forward and lifting the other leg high up.”
The benefits of this asana are a stretch of the hamstrings, and balance.  It is also good for toning the sides of the chest.
